Acer Iconia Smart Review – Smart In Name, Smart In Performance

3

The Iconia Smart is a very larger phone and is so large that, at times, it is hard to tell if it is a large phone or a small tablet. With a 4.8″ screen the Iconia Smart is only marginally smaller than the Dell Streak 5 that fell into the latter category of devices, but by rights should be understood as a phone. As can probably be imagined the larger screen has some benefits while having other drawbacks, most noticeably with carrying it about on your person.

The larger screen makes the Iconia Smart more ideal for viewing movies than smaller smartphone devices, and indeed even general web browsing is significantly improved with a roomier interface. The Iconia Smart comes with Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread installed with all the software and performance tweaks that come with it, and also runs with Acer UI 4.2 on top.

The 4.8″ screen is capacitive so it comes with multitouch input gestures supported, and also has one of the largest resolutions found on any smartphone at 480 x 1024. The Iconia also features a number of sensors including a proximity sensor and an accelerometer for autorotation of the interface, as well as one of the all new gyro sensors for multidirectional controls.

The Iconia Smart comes with some high speed connectivity options to aid in all forms of web and messaging features. This includes high speed HSPA connections as well Wi-Fi with DLNA and Wi-Fi Direct. These both provide you with more ways to connect the Iconia Smart to other devices, including home TVs. In this way you can enjoy videos from the Iconia Smart on a larger screen in the comfort of your living room.

There are plenty of great multimedia features to put this to good use with. The media player on board comes with a wide range of support for music and video, and there is also an additional HDMI port to provide another means of hooking up your TV. The Iconia Smart comes with up to 40GB storage with microSD cards, and as well as offline entertainment you can enjoy online video with YouTube and Adobe Flash support.

The Iconia Smart comes with some great touchscreen games available, with many more available from Android Market. Here you can get hold of many apps to further enhance the phone. On top of this the Iconia Smart comes with a very high quality 8 megapixel camera that features 720p video recording, and photos can be easily uploaded to share online either through Facebook or Picasa. The Iconia Smart also features a secondary 2 megapixel camera that can be used for video calling.

The Iconia Smart offers a great range of features in terms of entertainment and messaging. It is superb for all forms of online activity and the large screen makes it ideal for games and videos. While packing a powerful smartphone punch the only thing that may deter some people from this phone is the large screen which some people may find too big for comfort, although others may find that it is just what they are looking for in a mobile device.

Nokia SDK for Java Is Ready For Download

0

Nokia is on the move. They seem to be moving faster these days. If they continue like this, they can turn the clock and keep their first spotin the shipment of mobile phones. On July 29, 2011, they released their long awaited SDK kit for Java.

The Series 40 platform SDKs enable you to quickly and efficiently create and test Java™ applications, as well as browser content, multimedia messaging service (MMS) content, and, where supported, Adobe Flash Lite content and applications. To facilitate this, each SDK includes an emulator, Java APIs, documentation, code examples, and debugging tools. These tools are then combined with your favourite IDE to create, compile, and package applications and content. Testing can then be conducted on a PC using the emulator.

Description
This SDK supports Java development for Series 40 6th Edition, Feature Pack 1 phones. It also forms the basis for development support of future Series 40 platform versions, thereby eliminating the need for multiple Series 40 SDKs.

Supported runtimes
Development of applications using Java™ technology is supported by this SDK.

Supported content
Creation of web and messaging content is supported by this SDK.

Top Five Mobile Phone Vendors In Second Quarter Of 2011 (2Q2011) By IDC

0

According to IDC, the top mobile phone vendors for 2Q2011 are Nokia, Samsung, LG Electronics, Apple and ZTE. Nokia holds 24% market share, followied by Samsung at 19%. Apple is below LG Electronics with both having respectively 5.6% and 6.8%. ZTE rounds it up with 4.5%. Tekedia thinks that Huawei will be a huge chunk of the 39% others in the table above. Note that all the units are in millions.

Below is the adapted analyst comments from IDC with regards to each of these vendors.

Nokia’s hold on the top global mobile phone spot weakened last quarter as inventory buildups in traditional strongholds, namely China and Europe. Over the long term, Nokia’s smartphone fortunes will be dictated by its ability to sell Windows Phone 7 smartphone devices.

Samsung posted double-digit growth from the same quarter a year ago, and just slightly slower growth than the overall pace of the market. The difference between Samsung and market leader Nokia continued to shrink, with less than 20 million units separating the two vendors, mostly resulting from Nokia’s struggles in the market.

LG Electronics held on to its number three position during the quarter, thanks in part to its Optimus smartphone sales worldwide.  Originally, LG had anticipated flat growth in 2011 from 2010 levels, even as it expected the overall market to increase by 8%.

Apple maintained its number four position overall but closed the gap on Top 5 competitors thanks to another record unit shipment quarter. The company easily posted the highest growth rate of the worldwide leaders despite the fact that its flagship iPhone 4 is now more than a year old. The triple-digit shipment volume growth allowed Apple to more than double its share when compared to the same quarter last year.

ZTE likewise improved volumes and picked up market share during the quarter, enough to maintain the number five position. Long known as a purveyor of simple, voice-centric mobile phones, ZTE has stepped up its smartphone game with the continued success of its Android-powered Blade and Racer smartphones while announcing Libra, Skate, and Amigo smartphones for release in the second half of this year. Feature phones continued to be popular for ZTE, with the release of its 547i, a social networking-centric device in Europe.

MTN Enters The Game – Launches Android App Development Competition

0

As selling airtime becomes a commodity business with no end in sight, telecommunication companies must seek new revenue sources in Africa. The ARPU (average revenue per user) continues to fall calling for a need to try innovative solutions to stay competitive. One of those ways is to get into the business of apps. MTN is doing just that with the launching of an app competition.

MTN is challenging the developer community from around the world to create innovative apps inspired by Africa and the Middle-East. Our vision for the soon-to-be-launched MTN app store is to have content that is relevant to the lives of our subscribers, and informed by the conditions in our communities. Your creations can deal with any facet of life in Africa and the Middle-East – from solving some of the regions’ most pressing challenges, to lifestyle and entertainment, or even social networking. However, all apps must be built for the Android operating system, and be in English. The competition runs for six months – from July to December 2011 – and will have six monthly winners and an overall winner.

Prizes
The first prize for monthly winners is a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the second prize a Samsung Galaxy S2. The prize for the overall winner is a trip to the Mobile World Congress 2012!

‘Though it is not explained what MTN  will do with the app, we hope they are serious to share revenue with the developers. Getting a Galaxy is nothing big when compared to a million dollar app that can be sold across Middle East and Africa. They need to explain that, right now before the submissions start.
