The Humiliation Fiasco – What Annoymous Hack On Booz Allen Hamilton Must Teach IT Security Managers

0

Booz Allen is a giant in security consulting. It is a leading consulting firm that helps government clients solve their toughest problems with services in strategy, operations and security. It tells many US agencies on how to secure their infrastructure. But it never actually did what it preached. It is a very dangerous preacher who asks you to listen to what he says and not what he does. It fell to the hacker’s group, Anonymous.

Anonymous has become a fierce hacktivist group that has raised credit card companies, biotech companies and series of other prized ones. When they launched the search on Booz Allen, there was no going back. They have one problem with the company – its works with the US government on security and terrorism.

By the time they are done, more than 9,000 military email address and passwords have been compromised.

Now, this company will wonder how it handles classified information and gets paid to tell the government how to be secured and efficient when it does not do so itself. The hackers said that the server they broke had no security measure implemented.

The public traded company that got in Nov 2010 generated a revenue of $5.6 billion last year. But it will have tough month ahead as many will question its credibility to ask governments to spend endlessly on security when it does not do so itself.

The lesson is this: these consultants are earning livings. It is very imperative that you do not take what consultants tell you link hook and sinker. However, that they were attacked and fell did not mean they were not passing sold ideas. Do not worry how they live, focus on what they tell you but have judgement to think and question them.  Why? Most times what the consultants explain and recommend are good on paper and never on operations.

When they ask you to take all the cars from your managers in Africa, do not listen. Why, those managers will leave and move to other companies. Africa is not America where a company President can drive himself to work. In Africa, it is better you pay him lesser and hire that driver. That is just the reality. It is a status symbol. Period!

To  Booz Allen, now is the time for the security audit. Anonymous sent you a $340 invoice – hope you can afford that.

Microsoft Promises Free Antivirus For Small Businesses

0

Early this year, there was an announcement that Microsoft will begin to offer free antivirus software for local SMSs across some regions of the world.  This has become necessary owing to the continuous threat that Windows is subjected to on daily basis across the world.   To get over this game, Microsoft promised to update its licensing agreements to  pave way for companies with less than 10 PCs to have Microsoft Security Essentials free.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology.

It has been for personal PCs, but the buzz was on small companies. Kevin Connolly, Windows Product Manager for Microsoft West, East, Central Africa & the Indian Ocean Islands said that

“Microsoft Security Essentials is powered by the same core malware protection engine that drives Microsoft’s enterprise solutions. He added that, “By making Microsoft Security Essentials available to small businesses with fewer than 10 PCs, we are extending our commitment to help these companies save money and grow their business with free online protection.”

The good deal here is that those that did not pay for their copies of Microsoft products cannot enjoy this game. In other words, if your Windows copy is pirated, do not expect any free license soon, which is something I encountered a few times when I was working for a company that did laptop repairs in Brisbane. It is also important that Microsoft is yet to explain how this deployment will be since most of these companies do not have Internet access to enable them automatically get the antivirus free online.

Kenya Is Ramping Up Apps – Records 2400% Growth In Nokia Ovi Store Within 15 Months

0

Kenya continues to do well in the mobile apps sector and arguably is Africa’s leading nation in that. Its share of the Nokia Ovi Store has grown more than 2400% since it launched in April 2010 only two apps. Today, it has excess of 50 apps. Interestingly, some of these apps are doing pretty well. The one on cars is really cool.

You may think we are counting quantity here. No, these apps are clean and very ready for primetime. They range from game to productivity to anytime you can imagine. And they are largely locally inspired, meaning they do not compete with the behemoths from Silicon Valley and likes. They stay in their domains and cover their flanks.

Nokia East and Southern Africa General Manager, Kenneth Oyolla, has noted this trend and stated:

“The Ovi Store now has apps with content ranging from news and job offers to social media and mobile commerce. These are interesting times for developers and application users in Kenya and trends continue to change every day,” said Kenneth Oyolla,

“The positive trend is that the rise in the number of applications is satisfying increasing demand for locally relevant content especially in Kenya. Users of Nokia handsets in Kenya accounted for 60 percent of these downloads in East and Southern Africa between July 2010 and October 2010. This steady growth both on the demand and the supply side is a positive development in the overall growth of mobile apps as well as increasing revenues for developers.”

Africa continues its good momentum to define its space in the mobile ecosystem. They are coming with local ideas and making progress in this business. In East Africa, especially Kenya, Africa gets the window and trial lab for new ideas on mobile commerce, mobile payments and mobile productivity tools. Kenya is the leader but that position is being challenged by Nigeria and South Africa. In general, Africa has a positive progression in this arena.

“For now the potential for growth seems to be unlimited because there’s a huge demand coming from an ever increasing number of mobile phone internet users. This means that developers have an opportunity to create locally relevant apps” said Mr Oyolla.

Selection Criteria

The primary objective for the agenda development of all GSMA events is to create the most compelling conference programme possible for each person in our attendee demographic. We use the following criteria to review each submission:

  • Relevance of the subject
  • Strength of angle taken
  • Originality of proposed content
  • Originality of the presentation format
  • Newsworthiness of proposed content
  • Quality and level of speaker
  • Strength of references offered

The agenda development team works hard to ensure that the overall programme, and each session within it, remains balanced. In order to achieve this we look to include a variety of viewpoints and representatives from different elements of the value chain on each subject to ensure the number of speakers from individual companies is limited and reflective of their representation in the industry. Every submission is treated in the strictest confidence. The agenda development team is very happy to sign a non-disclosure agreement with submitting companies to allow the inclusion of any commercially sensitive material that would help to strengthen your proposal.
