Gahaya Links Provides The Platform For Weavers To Tap Opportunities in Uganda

0

Gahaya Links is a leading handicrafts export company in Rwanda that works with over 3400 rural weavers and exports the products, including their famed peace basket, to the United States through the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (“AGOA”). The product design is based on detailed assessment, understanding and anticipation of customer needs and preferences. The company is proud of their longstanding relationships with Macy’s as well as Neiman Marcus.

It is a for-profit Rwandan handicraft company based on the simple principle of women economic empowerment through fair-trade. Our products are knitted in traditional, authentic Rwandan patterns and are of high quality to ensure a sustainable market for the Gahaya Links weavers. Crafted products include beautifully woven baskets, home décor, jewelry and textiles.

Gahaya Links promotes job- and wealth-creation at the grassroots level, identifying poor and illiterate women for training and inclusion in their 4000-strong artisan workforce.

In addition to technical training, the company offers training courses ranging from basic banking and saving to hygiene, involvement in the political process and HIV/AIDS prevention, to unity and reconciliation. Master weavers participate in marketing outreach initiatives through participation in markets and trade shows abroad, and in representing Rwanda throughout the world in folk art festivals, tourism fairs and women’s empowerment conferences.

“We are a producer of high-quality Rwandan handicrafts targeting sophisticated local and international markets. We plan diversification into textiles, sisal-based household implements and woven artwork, and continue to build close ties to disenfranchised rural groups throughout the country.”

Not Much Technology, But They Focus on Hiring Dropouts With HIV – Ugandan Safi Cleaning Pushing Entrepreneurship

0

Safi Cleaning Services Limited was set up with a vision to improve the quality of lives of Ugandans by providing services in relation to sanitation and environmental issues.

The company was started by the owner / CEO during her graduate studies, when she identified an unmet need in the market for sanitation and environmental services. Following the successful fulfilment of a small number of 2-year cleaning contracts, she expanded her product portfolio to meet identified client needs, adding pest control, dry cleaning, garbage disposal and compound maintenance. The company’s client base of 35+ companies includes government institutions, hospitals, schools, NGOs, and major corporations such as Shell Oil.

The company hires high school dropouts, focusing on those with HIV. All new hires are placed on a 3-month training program prior to being deployed at client sites, after which they receive on-the-job training on customer service. Customer satisfaction is systematically tracked, with consistently high satisfaction ratings, and proactive issue-resolution mechanisms.

“Safi is a one-stop fully fledged cleaning service for Ugandan corporate clients, providing trouble-free cleaning services and solutions for a broad range of public, private and non-governmental organizations and institutions.”

AAR Health Is Redefining Health Services In East Africa

0

AAR Health started as a rescue and evacuation service in Kenya serving the expatriate market, adding in-patient services in 1991 and a clinic and HMO in 1994. Today, the company has grown to 140,000 customers, representing a 25% market share in Kenya. Expanding to Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia, the company harmonised its product offerings across markets to ensure its leadership position in the provision of health care solutions in Africa.

When AAR started operating in 1984, our primary business was evacuation of medical and accident casualties, both by road and air. As our membership increased, so did the needs of our clients, creating more opportunities to comprehensively provide healthcare packages for our clients. It is our flexibility, innovation and readiness to respond to the needs of our clients that have today made us the leading healthcare company in East Africa, as encapsulated in our vision, mission and core values

In line with their goal of providing ethical healthcare services, AAR Health made a number of investments aimed at increasing their reach: a 60-clinic network in rural Kenya; providing training for their preferred provider; a strategic initiative to work with hospitals to reduce costs and develop new products; a plan to open more centers through a new franchise model; and an aggressive business plan to provide services to the poorest communities with an affordable service mix.

“AAR’s business is to achieve commercial success by providing healthcare solutions in ways that honour ethical values and are compliant with legal requirements, as well as to demonstrate respect for people, less fortunate members of the community and the natural environment.”
