Microcontroller – A blend of software and hardware (part 1)

3

A microcontroller is a single chip; self-contained computer which incorporates all the basic components of a personal computer on single integrated circuit (IC). These small devices can do so much great jobs that only our imagination is the limit. A basic understanding of electronics and digital circuits is all that is required to get started. Think of any logical application and you will find microcontroller handling the work well. Industrial automation including automatic assembly lines, robots and quality control systems all are backed by some kind of microcontroller.

Why Microcontroller?

So exactly why microcontroller or a microprocessor? This is the question which needs to be clarified before putting the heads down. Integrated circuit (IC) is small device, with lots of circuitry inside it, with few connections for external interface. We have several ICs with numerous functionalities in terms of tasks they are meant to perform. The circuit inside an integrated circuit which is composed of many components either digital or analog is designed for a purpose. For instance, LM 380 is designed as an audio amplifier and all the necessary circuitry are inside to make a complete audio amplifier IC. Similarly a 7447 is a binary to 7-segment decoder, and has input pins to accept binary coded decimal (BCD) number; the output pins will then turn on and off accordingly to display the number on a 7-segment display. We have hundreds and thousands of ICs with specific functions in the world of electronics. In order to make good use of these ICs, devices data sheet must be well understood by the circuit designer for any application.

On the other hand, microcontrollers and microprocessors are integrated circuits, but they differ fundamentally from other ICs. They are a class in themselves, that the designers have not made them to do a particular function. They are like a plain sheet of paper waiting for pen to put content on them. When they are newly purchased, they have no content in them (no specific function like LM 380 or 7447 or 555 timer). In order to get them useful, we have to put content in them thus programming comes in. Thus a microprocessor or microcontroller can be programed to read the input signal from a sensor and control a particular output (e.g. stepper motor or DC motor) based on the input signal status. While the same IC can be configured later, to read the status of an infra-red sensor, decode the signal and turn another device ON or OFF. If these two types of circuitries were to be made using conventional digital ICs, it would have required a large number of components and any change will require an entire change of the hardware design. In the case of microprocessor or microcontroller, the same IC, can be programmed to do different tasks, and any change in specifications can easily be implemented by just changing the coding. This greatly facilitated the engineers and hobbyists to rapidly develop new electronic devices, and continuously improve previous ones. Design times, time to market and hardware requirements are now decreased. Large hardware designs were reduced, and most of the circuitry was replaced by the configuration scripts (programs).

Today we call the ability to configure a microprocessor or microcontroller, programming. A program is nothing but a series of instructions, in a correct and logical manner to instruct the microprocessor or microcontroller on the desired function. Thus you have to learn the instructions your particular microcontroller understands, and what those instructions order it to do. Then it’s your mind, and ideas how you play with these instructions to get your job done. Literally there are hundreds of methods to get the same job done. A microcontroller is a complete, small scale computer with all the necessary devices on-board. All you need is the external hardware, to take in input and control output like sensors and motors.

[Breaking News] The Federal Government of Nigeria Retains Fasmicro for Microelectronics Consultancy

0

We report that the Nigerian government has hired us to help develop a Microelectronics blueprint for the nation.

In a letter communicating this paid consultancy, dated May 24 2011, the government acknowledged our world class proposal and stated in part:

“as a recognized expert in the art of microelectronics and embedded systems, the government is hereby engaging you …to help to develop a blueprint for the establishment of microelectronics laboratory in Nigeria. …Your remuneration will be …. “.

We will submit this blueprint within 4 weeks. We want to promise to all Nigerians that we will do the best possible. We are honored that the FGN chose a local company that understands what the nation needs over a foreign one that has no clue on the specific nature of the nation.

We will remain humble for this honor and continue to push the limits of technology. We gave Africa its first Android apps store and we are coming with a breakthrough technology this summer. Right in Owerri, we are creating technologies.

Today, we received a London based apps maker applying to host apps in our store. And we welcomed a visitor from US to our Owerri design center ( the man  operates apps business in US). The truth is, we are real. Come over to Owerri and experience engineering. We are #1. If you challenge it, show us what you have done!

Tablet PC Purchase? Things You Need To Consider

1

Tablets are lightweight, extremely portable, and very easy to use. They fill the gap between a smartphone and a laptop. But the question is which one is the best for you? it’s all about you. The main functions of Tablet are: to surf internet through WIFI or 3G (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Skype, email, etc.), to watch video and to listen to music, for reading ebooks, documents and play games. Almost all the Tablet has these functions.

Operating system

Most tablets run a slightly improved version of a smartphone operating system. This operating system takes advantage of the tablet’s wider screen and faster processor to give us a much better experience. Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS are the two most prominent operating systems on tablets and there are a lot of similarities between these two operating systems. Both have apps and app stores, though Apple’s App Store is larger than Google’s Android Market for now but Android is fast growing and is open source. Both are excellent for surfing the web, listening to music and so on. Deciding on an operating system really comes down to personal preference. But with the trend in the market, Android might eventually take the lead in the nearest future.

Portability
Portability is an important issue when shopping for tablet since size and weight are one of the reasons for having a tablet instead of a laptop. Depending on how you will be using your tablet, weight can quickly become a major concern. Somehow, weight of a tablet is related to the screen size so one of the options is by choosing a smaller screen size.7 inch, 8 inch, 9.7 inch, 10 inch. The tradeoff is that small size is lighter but image is small when you watch video or webpage. Bigger sizes are heavier but big images. It’s all about you

Touch screen
Resistive touch panel is more accurate when you touch a point. However, more and more manufacturer use capacitive touch panel because it is faster (it responds faster when you type on your screen) and support multi-touch. Therefore, capacitive touch panel is the better choice. Multi-touch is another interesting function. With this function, you can enlarge a picture or webpage or documents by your two fingers.

Central processing unit (CPU)
For most people, CPU is the most important. It decides the reflection and the price of a Tablet PC. The CPU with cortex A8 or A9 is the best is one of the best, such as Freescale and Telechips. CPU VIA is the cheapest one. The CPU can be around 10,000 naira difference in price.

Speed and memory
Almost all the tablet on the market has roughly the same speed of processor. A dual-core, running around 1 gigahertz (1GHz) per core is good and is fast and should be able to perform any task you throw at it without skipping a beat but the most important is chose according to your need considering your pocket. There are lesser processor speeds that will still be able to meet your need.

Memory, commonly called RAM, is like a temporary folder that the tablet’s operating system uses for short-term storage. Typically, the more RAM a device has, the faster it can load and display graphics-intensive web pages or applications. How quick the device feels when you use it is usually also attributed to RAM, but the processor speed also plays a major role here. A tablet with 1GB of RAM is good but is also dependent on your need. 512MB is the most popular size on the market now.

ROM
ROM is the memory; it’s like the hard disk. The bigger the better (so that you can have enough space to install apps, music, movies, books, and more on your tablet). But this is not very important as at the time you are about to buy, if you can extend the memory capacity with a TF card (memory card) when you desire. Note that ability to expand beyond the built-in storage capacity most be considered.

Generally, CPU, RAM and Touch screen decides the reflection of a Tablet PC. They are the most important specification when you are looking for a Tablet. But the in the case of Nigeria, battery is the most important because of power issue in Nigeria.
