Get Startup Funds from Google

0

Have a great tech idea?

The Umbono program will help transform your vision into a business. Your idea – probably web or mobile deployed – is exciting on many levels: for your future users, potential investors, and for the people on your team building it.

The Program

6 Months

The Umbono program lasts for 6 months—enough time for your team to get your idea formally off the ground or to prepare your existing business for its next round of funding. By the end of the program, you’ll be pitch-ready and have a business plan in place.

Seed Capital

Teams should expect to receive a minimum of $25,000 and a maximum of $50,000. Capital from Angel investors will be exchanged for equity (10%) and will be governed by standard terms of investment (the same terms for each team). Funding will be disbursed around milestones; a customized schedule will be drafted with each team upon program induction, based on your anticipated development schedule. It is up to you to decide how to use the funds.

The Space

We provide the furnished office space and bandwidth for the duration of the program. This is a collaborative space for all Teams in the program, providing a forum for mutual support, idea sharing and tech talks.

Business Skills Training

Umbono Teams will have access to the Bandwidth Barn’s VeloCITI program. This program covers all business topics relevant to an emerging business, from business model definition to market segmentation and pricing strategies. The 10 business modules and 4 additional financial modules are led by external topic experts and business leaders. The sessions will take place on a rolling basis and Teams can participate in all modules or only those areas where they would like to build up more skills specific to the stage of their product development and enterprise.

The Mentor Base

For the duration of the Umbono Program, Teams will have regular access to our extensive network of business and technology experts, many of whom are Googlers. Umbono’s Mentor Base is extensive, so we are confident that we can connect you with an expert for any coaching needs, be it marketing, finance or product development-related. (See our People page for some examples of our mentors). In addition to that, each team will be paired with a Google Power Mentor, someone from our Product Management team, you will be in regular weekly contact with them throughout the 6-month program for hands-on guidance.

Visibility

All great stories need a platform for advertising their success. Association with the Umbono brand and resulting awareness at our networking events, blog posts, and press releases will provide Teams with reach to additional funding.

Lagos GIS – Buying land with peace

1

Government is serious business. And technology is making better. Yes, Lagos state has got a  Geographic Information System (GIS). For ordinary citizens, individual or corporate, this is a new world. You can acquire land with a higher peace of mind.

How does it work? An expert explains:

It will improve land acquisition a lot. It is also going to ease the burden of land administration also. It is going to enhance information which ordinarily you would have travelled kilometres to have. Now it will be at your fingertips. You want to buy a piece of land, you want to know the status and so on and so forth. With GIS, land information will be easy to access by you right inside your room. You can ascertain who is or was owner of the land you are interested in. You will also be able to know how many times such land has passed through how many buyers. Also, who is the current owner of the land? It is not who owns a land alone, who wants to buy a land that is supposedly under government acquisition? Even if it is under government acquisition, you can know the position you can buy and they will just ratify such a piece of land for you but there are some that are in prohibited areas, you dare not go there. Everyone wants to own a house. It is going to reduce 419 activities.

Zen Phones in Nigeria, thanks to Glo 25k calls

0

Glo has a great package which was introduced recently.

Globacom said it made the 25 kobo per second charge a flat rate which applies for all local calls irrespective of which network is being called or time of day or which part of the country the call is originating from.

A new package also allows subscribers to call one Special Number at only 2 kobo per second. Interestingly, no daily or monthly rental is charged to enjoy the very cheap rate. The subscriber, however, has an option of registering 5 Glo numbers which he can call at 18 kobo per second. Again, registration is free and there is no rental charge.

Innovation is hitting up in Nigeria’s mobile ecosystem.

That is why Zen phones have crept into the country to compete. With the largest consumer market in the black race, Nigeria is on roll in the mobile world.  The 6 Zen Mobile phones series launched include the X 381, the X410 , the X430, series; the M20, the Z66 Qwerty and the Z82 Qwerty series. For the comapany, the phones are affordable, have Quality, trend and was ready to fight for position with well known brands like Nokia, Sonny Ericsson, LG, Samsung among others.

Fake Nokia Phones – The problem on Nigeria’s m-payment system

0

The Nigerian government must help in combating fake mobile phones in the country. Nokia flagged off anti-counterfeit campaign drawing many stakeholders into it last year. But for sometime now, nothing seems to be heard about it. The reason why all and sundry should join Nokia is simply based on the fact that fake phones could compromise the m-payment system. Phone companies have built some special features on security – fake ones could become the weakest links, especially now the country has gone into mobile payment,

Of course, counterfeit of products is not limited to Nokia products, it is all over the ICT sector and even beyond. All kinds of products from pharmaceuticals to electronics are all suffering that scourge.  There is a need to step up this fight to keep the ecosystem clean.
