Buhari Congratulates Tinubu, Asks Aggrieved Parties to Provide Evidence Election was Rigged

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Bola Tinubu, for being declared the winner of Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday.

Buhari, who shared his congratulatory message via social media, described Tinubu as “the best person for the job”, promising to “work with him and his team to ensure an orderly handover of power.”

The president spoke amid public outcry and reports by both local and international election observers that the presidential election lacks credibility. Though Buhari acknowledged that there have been irregularities, including the failure of INEC to transmit results electronically, he said the outcome of the election reveal that democracy is ripening in our country.

He added that none of the issues registered represent a challenge to the freeness and fairness of the elections.

The president, who had in the buildup of the election, vowed to ensure that Nigeria has free and fair election, urged the public not protest the result.

The trio of Labour Party (LP), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) have rejected the outcome of the election, calling for cancellation of the presidential polls and the resignation of INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.

Buhari said “if any candidate believes they can prove the fraud they claim is committed against them, then bring forward the evidence.” Failure to do so he said, “then we must conclude that the election was indeed the people’s will.”

Read the full statement below:

I congratulate His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory. Elected by the people, he is the best person for the job. I shall now work with him and his team to ensure an orderly handover of power.

The election was Africa’s largest democratic exercise. In a region that has undergone backsliding and military coups in recent years, this election demonstrates democracy’s continued relevance and capability to deliver for the people it serves.

Within Nigeria, the results reveal democracy’s ripening in our country. Never has the electoral map shifted so drastically in one cycle.

In the presidential elections, States in all regions across Nigeria changed colour. Some amongst you may have noticed my home State among them. The winning candidate did not carry his own home State either. That happens during a competitive election.

Votes and those that cast them cannot be taken for granted. Each must be earned. Competition is good for our democracy. There is no doubt the people’s decision has been rendered in the results we look at today.

That is not to say the exercise was without fault. For instance, there were technical problems with electronic transmission of the results. Of course, there will be areas that need work to bring further transparency and credibility to the voting procedure.

However, none of the issues registered represent a challenge to the freeness and fairness of the elections.

I know some politicians and candidates may not agree with this view. That too is fine. If any candidate believes they can prove the fraud they claim is committed against them, then bring forward the evidence.

If they cannot, then we must conclude that the election was indeed the people’s will – no matter how hard that may be for the losers to accept. If they feel the need to challenge, please take it to the courts, not to the streets.

To take to the streets means they are not doing it in the interest of the people, but rather to inflame, to put people in harm’s way and all for personal, selfish gains.

After a degree of polarization that necessarily accompanies any election, it is now time to come together and act responsibly. I call on all candidates to remember the peace pledge they signed just days before the election.

Do not undermine the credibility of INEC. Let us now move forward as one.

The people have spoken.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Tesla Plans to Build New Factory in Mexico

0

Automotive and clean energy company Tesla has revealed plans to build a new factory in Mexico.

This is coming after the President of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Tuesday announced that the EV automaker has committed to building a major plant in the industrial hub of Monterrey in Northern Mexico.

Monterrey, which is highly industrialized and close to the U.S. border, had long been considered the frontrunner for any Tesla investment.

President Manuel disclosed that the agreement for Tesla to build a plant in Mexico came in phone calls he had with Tesla CEO Elon Musk after accepting the country’s terms and conditions.

In his words, “It is good news, yes, the company Tesla is coming, the battery part is still on hold but it is the whole auto plant, which I understand will be very big. He (Musk) was very receptive, understanding our concerns and accepting our proposals which will be known from tomorrow,”

“This is going to mean a considerable investment and many, many jobs”,he added.

Reports reveal that Manuel had previously ruled out the construction of a plant in the arid northern state of Nuevo Leon, where Monterrey is the capital because he didn’t want water-hungry factories in a region that suffers water shortages. But he said Musk’s company had offered commitments to address those concerns, including using recycled water. Meanwhile, Musk’s proposal seems to have overridden the president’s stance.

It is however interesting to note that this would be Tesla’s third factory outside of the U.S after the firm opened plants in China and Germany in recent years. Reports reveal that the newest Tesla factory represented an initial $1bn investment, which could grow to $10bn over time.

Tesla’s expansion into Mexico is coming after the company’s CEO Elon Musk has stated for months that he will announce a new factory, and is also set to discuss expansion plans, next-generation vehicle platforms, and other topics at an “Investor Day” event on Wednesday. The company is also expected to give details of a new, cheaper model of vehicle at the event.

Tesla has been firing on all cylinders in setting up factories in different parts of the world to increase sales and stay ahead of competitors in the EV industry. In January this year, a Bloomberg report disclosed that Tesla was nearing a preliminary deal to build production facilities in Indonesia with a capacity of one million units. Also, the company’s CEO Elon Musk had disclosed in November 2022 that South Korea was among its top locations for a factory it plans to build in Asia for making EVs.

Elon Musk hinted at plans to expand Tesla’s network of Gigafactories as the company aims to meet its ambition to build as many as 20 million electric cars a year. According to Musk, manufacturing will be Tesla’s “long-term sustainable advantage” over its rivals in the race to dominate the still nascent electric vehicle market.

Obi and Atiku Should Challenge The Outcome of Nigeria 2023 Presidential Results

0

For the sham which INEC orchestrated in the name of an election, I move the motion for Obi and Atiku to begin a legal challenge of the result. While we understand the reality that Tinubu has been declared the president-elect (I acknowledge it and already planning for that future), I also want to activate the reality that Nigerians need to examine why INEC became exceedingly incompetent.

I have looked at historical data since 1999, the 2023 election is the most unfortunate.

In 2023, Nigeria has 93.4 million voters but 21 million made the final decision.

In 2019, the total voters were 84 million and 26 million made the call.

In the last poll I shared here, it said that Obi wins if turnout is huge, and Tinubu wins if turnout is low. And the model was that turnout would be High, at least beating the 2019 number. But somehow, we lost 5 million votes despite adding close to 10 million new voters.

For academic purposes since there is largely nothing the court can do since INEC itself does not understand what it is doing, we need to look deeper as a nation, so that we can advance. I want the legal debate so that hopefully we can have reforms. In 2015, Rivers State had an excess of 1.5 million votes ; in 2023, it had less than 500,000 votes. That repeated across the nation!

My motion goes beyond Senator Tinubu, I think Nigeria needs to advance on this. Obi and Atiku must challenge this as a way of healing the land because that process must happen

(While that happens, be a realistic person and build on it because on May 29, 2023, Mr. Tinubu will take the oath. Plan)

Cybersafety: Proven Ways to Keep your Children Safe Online

0

Parenting has always been challenging, especially in the digital age. The advent of social media has equally fraught it with even more challenges. Children now have more access to technology and the internet, which seeps into everything they do, from learning to playing. The internet is a world on its own, with its challenges, and continuous usage has created concern for mindful parents.

When a child is not duly protected against it, they risk being bullied, one of the many dangers that can come upon an unsuspecting child. Parents want their kids to be safe and will do their best to protect them.

How Cybersecurity Affects Your Children

Children are spending much of their time online now more than ever. Most kids aren’t aware of the dangers they are up against. Cyberbullying is a form of bullying using online means and is increasingly common as the digital space has expanded and technology has advanced.

Many parents would like to believe they have the lid regarding their children’s online activities, as explained in this ExpressVPN article, parents aren’t as aware of social media issues. Kids who frequent social media are often oblivious to the harm it can cause and are, thus, at the mercy of online predators. Parents should get involved and adopt better ways to navigate online challenges and keep their children safe.

Besides cyberbullying, UNICEF states Cyberconflict as another online threat to children, directly or indirectly. Some other online risks children are exposed to include exploitation, abuse, exposure to inappropriate content, privacy and data breaches, trafficking, and other subtle threats to their well-being.

Most parents assume that their kids are savvier than them and should know their way around the internet. This could be true, but children can’t fully protect themselves from online risks. Ensuring safety for your kids online is not rocket science and does not necessarily require extensive technical knowledge. There are simple steps parents can undertake to provide security and protection for their kids.

Online Safety Tips That Can Help You Keep Your Kids Safe

Educate Them

Don’t ever think that your kids are too tender to understand the concept of cybersecurity. Explain to them how the internet works and teach them about cybersecurity. When they know, they can look out for themselves online.

You could add bookmarks to their browsers to direct them toward safer websites. NetSmartz offers free resources to educate children and adults on being safe online.

Update Your Software & Enable Parental Control

Make sure to update your software or hardware to the newest version but be cautious of downloading untrustworthy materials.

Most devices come with child protection controls which can be enabled under settings. To further strengthen the “control,” you can create a strong password on your home wireless network and set time limits per user for browsing.

Be Approachable

Keep lines of communication open and let your children know they can come to you with any questions, confusion, or problems they might have encountered online. Get involved in their activities and know who they are talking to.

We live in a digital world, and thus, cybersecurity is a foremost concern for everyone. Keeping your kids safe is of as much importance too. With the proper safety measures set in place, it can go a long way to keep children safe online.

Acceptance Speech of Nigeria’s President-elect Bola Tinubu (full text)

3

Acceptance speech delivered by president-elect Bola Tinubu, in the early hours of Wednesday after he was declared the winner of 2023 Nigeria’s presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Read the full speech below:

My fellow Nigerians,

I am profoundly humbled that you have elected me to serve as the 16th president of our beloved republic. This is a shining moment in the life of any man and affirmation of our democratic existence. From my heart, I say thank you.

Whether you are Batified, Atikulated, Obidient, Kwankwasiyya, or have any other political affiliation, you voted for a better, more hopeful nation and I thank you for your participation and dedication to our democracy.

You decided to place your trust in the democratic vision of a Nigeria founded on shared prosperity and one nurtured by the ideals of unity, justice, peace and tolerance. Renewed hope has dawned in Nigeria.

We commend INEC for running a free and fair election. The lapses that did occur were relatively few in number and were immaterial to the final outcome. With each cycle of elections, we steadily perfect this process so vital to our democratic life.

Today, Nigeria stands tall as the giant of Africa. It shines even brighter as the continent’s biggest democracy.

I thank all who supported my campaign. From President Buhari who adeptly led my campaign as its chairman, to my Vice Presidential Candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima.

To the progressive governors of our party and this nation, to the party leadership, to our loyal party members. I owe you a debt of gratitude. To the entire campaign organization, I thank you sincerely.

I thank my loving wife and dear family whose support was ceaseless and inspiring. Without you, this victory would not be possible.

I am grateful to Almighty God. By His mercy, I was born a son of Nigeria and through His sublime purpose I find myself the victor of this election. May He grant me the wisdom and courage to lead the nation to the greatness He alone has destined for it.

Finally, I thank the Nigerian people for their abiding belief in our democracy. I shall be a fair leader to all Nigerians. I will be in tune with your aspirations, charge up your energies and harness your talents to deliver a nation that we can be proud of.

To my fellow candidates, former VP Atiku, former governor Kwankwaso, former governor Obi and all others, I extend the hand of friendship. This was a competitive, high-spirited campaign.

You have my utmost respect.

Political competition must now give way to political conciliation and inclusive governance.

During the election, you may have been my opponent but you were never my enemy. In my heart, you are my brothers.

Still, I know some candidates will be hard put to accept the election results. It is your right to seek legal recourse. What is neither right nor defensible is for anybody to resort to violence. Any challenge to the electoral outcome should be made in a court of law, and not in the streets.

I also ask my supporters to let peace reign and tensions fade. We ran a principled, peaceful and progressive campaign. The aftermath of our campaign must be as benign.

Yes, there are divisions amongst us that should not exist. Many people are uncertain, angry and hurt; I reach out to every one of you. Let the better aspects of our humanity step forward at this fateful moment. Let us begin to heal and bring calm to our nation.

Now, to you, the young people of this country, I hear you loud and clear. I understand your pains, your yearnings for good governance, a functional economy and a safe nation that protects you and your future.

I am aware that for many of you Nigeria has become a place of abiding challenges limiting your ability to see a bright future for yourselves.

Remodeling our precious national home requires the harmonious efforts of all of us, especially the youth. Working together, we shall move this nation as never before.

My running mate, Vice President-elect Shettima, and I understand the challenges ahead. More importantly, we also understand and deeply value the talent and innate goodness of you, the Nigerian people. We pledge to listen and to do the difficult things, the big deeds that put us on the path of irreversible progress. Hold us firmly to account, but please give us a chance first.

Together, we shall build a brighter and more productive society for today, tomorrow and for years to come.

Today, you have given me the greatest honor you can bestow on one man.

In return, I will give you my utmost as your next president and commander-in-chief. Peace, unity and prosperity shall be the cornerstones of the society we intend to build. When you gaze upon what we shall accomplish in the coming years, you shall speak with pride at being a Nigerian.

I thank you all.

God bless you all.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
