This is the list of ideas pitched at Garage48 Accra. The interesting aspect is the clone of  something better than TweetDec. Will it be sold?

1. GHSWAPS – web-app to give away, swap stuff, home appliance, etc – things they don’t need really anymore. A web-based exchange platform.

2. EazyResponse – an app to help a school to communicate with parents of the students. Sending out the notifications helping parents to get info on their mobile.
3. eVOCITI.com – a database combining people with common interests and products / services according to their interests. Perfect for events.
4. One Item Per Day – On-line / mobile auction site, enabling to express also preferences of the buyers – getting notified when the product becomes available. Bidders are the winners!
5. Adwaso – a mobile app to get adverts from merchants according to your interests. Bringing merchants and their customers together.
6. National Documents Library – system to categorize and organize documents for ministries and other state entities. A document management system for the government entities. In the future an option to digitize older documents to bring into the system.
7. Keepupwithme – bring together and aggregate all social platforms into one – one point to see the info coming from the different channels and one point to publish the information. (similar to TweetDec, but better)
8. Back to Ghana – talented people study abroad and they don’t come back. We must get them back. On-line portal advertising business opportunities in ghana and job opportunities in Ghana. An on-line community to bring people back to Ghana. Monetizing – advertisement by companies searching for foreign partners and investors.
9. Students Tour Planner – event organizer with a twist. Students can plan a tour around Ghana with agreed budget down to detail. Transportation, accommodation, and food would be suggested. Also enabling planning for groups.
10. Unified Payment Platform – bringing together different payment system providers (MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money, eTranzact, etc). Challenge to get the providers together.
11. Shopping Cart – cart combining buying, selling and shipping.
12. ElectronicPA – electronic personalized assistant, helping setting appointments, meetings, giving also alerts etc. An on-line secretary.
13. Assign Mate – sharing ideas and intelligence together. Learning together virtually. Joining classmates, library, and teachers.
14. Basta-Basta – Native mobile app helping security in Ghana and across Africa. Map is on the phone – helping to send an SOS messages to nearby policemen. Policemen can also locate other policemen nearby.
15. empCollab – employee retention management app. people who have quit their job, the employer often does not know why people quit. automate the exit interview process – so the exit interview is not a face-to-face or official office environment interview. Statistical analysis.
16. TourGhana – on-line 3D Tour of the Tourist Sites in Ghana. Monetization – the tour costs a little.
17. StreetCafe – solving problem of limited internet access (for example at the university campus). Create hotspots out-doors, access is granted via mobile short-code.
18. Housing Directory – Bringing together people looking for accommodation and people offering rooms or apartments. A channel for finding rooms and apartments. With maps and preference listings. Helping students and people moving to town.

Beta Release of Windows Phone Developer Tools That Support Mango Available For Download

Now, you can download the beta release of  Windows Phone Developer Tools that support Mango. This was contained in an official blog statement on the development site.

 

Today Microsoft is showing off many of the new features coming in the next version of Windows Phone, code named Mango. We highlighted a few features like hardware accelerated IE9 with HTML5, increased multitasking capabilities and the addition of Twitter to the People hub at Mobile World Congress in February. During April’s MIX11 event, we gave developers a deep dive into new Mango capabilities and opportunities and promised new tools in May.

 

I’m pleased to announce that the beta release of the Windows Phone Developer Tools that support Mango will be available for download today, in just a few hours! We also have some exciting news to share about Windows Phone Marketplace.

South African Cell C Offers To Purchase For Cash Its $270m 11% Senior Subordinated Notes

Cell C (Pty) has nnounced an offer to Purchase, a Consent Solicitation and an Asset Sale Offer, in respect of its Dollar-Denominated Senior Subordinated Notes Due 2015. This is contained in a press release by the company.

 

Cell C (Pty) Limited announced today that it is offering to purchase for cash any and all of its outstanding $270,000,000 11% Senior Subordinated Notes due 2015.  Cell C is also soliciting consents from holders of the Notes to certain proposed amendments to the indenture governing the Notes that would eliminate most of the restrictive covenants and certain events of default in the indenture. In addition, by reason of a recently completed asset sale, Cell C is conducting an asset sale offer for up to $138,016,000 in principal amount of the Notes.  The asset sale offer will expire on June 20, 2011, and the offer to purchase and consent solicitation will expire on June 21, 2011.

 

There are two aspects of this. The company wants to redesign and realign its capital structure. Also, it is very optimistic about its business to do this.  This we hope will enable it to compete and expand in its business.

 

Of course, realignment of capital structure could be helpful in generating further capital if potential investors like  the resulting structure. Provided this is not a redemption process, it is a positive step.

 

Etisalat Nigeria Hosts Distributors To Award Ceremony, Today – It Is “Etisalat Heroes Awards”

Etisalat Nigeria will host its distribution partners to an award ceremony. That will take place in Lagos today. The event is called  Etisalat Heroes Awards and will certainly demonstrate how the company appreciates its partners in the nation. It is looking back at 2010 and the contributions of its partner to Etisalat success. They will reward the vision, contribution, tenacity and efforts of their key partners. Through this they will appreciate all the partners that have helped them to penetrate into the nation.

 

This is the second year of this award and it runs from regional to national level so that no one is left behind. Some get cars, foreign trips, tablets, printers, TV and other items. The company’s Chief  Commercial Officer, Wael Ammar explained the motive for this award, thus:

 

“the awards is one of the many ways we reward and encourage the symbiotic relationship between Etisalat and its distribution partners which has produced tremendous success in our business. The awards will definitely continue to grow because our distributors and partners are increasing on a daily basis.”

 

And on yes, Nigerian artistes will perform to the joy of the partners.

 

It Is Official – Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE Will Make Tablets On Windows Mobile. Is Nokia Dead?

Tomorrow, Tekedia will publish an analysts take on the future of Nokia and the gamble of abandoning its operating system (OS) to sign up for Microsoft Windows. This could turn out be a very big strategic blunder by the new CEO.

 

It is already confirmed that Acer, Fujitsu and Zte will make tablets in Windows Mobile. The big question is? How can Nokia compete in this space with this low cost brands. Nokia might have prepared its grave in this alliance with Microsoft.  Without any right of exclusivity, the deal is not right. Windows Mobile will turn out to be like Android and many players will join. That way, the money that Nokia paid Microsoft might not have helped it that much.

 

OS is becoming a commodity and Windows is joining that wagon which Android started. But for Nokia, it is innovate now or become history. Yes, they will, but what of the cost? People in the developing world will surely choose a cheaper version than what Nokia will give. With three Asian giants in the game, that premium price may not be possible.
