Google “Maps Navigation For Mobile” Now Available In South AfricaG

0

Google seems to be busy in Southern and Eastern Africa. One hopes they are not writing policies in Nigeria.  Let them do and build things as other guys in Kenya and South Africa are doing.

There is now a  Google Maps Navigation (Beta) for phones running Android 1.6 in South Africa. It includes everything you’d expect from a GPS navigation system – turn-by-turn voice guidance and automatic rerouting – and more. Unlike most navigation systems, Google Maps Navigation was built from the ground up to take advantage of the local phone Internet connection.

Here are a few of of the best features:

  • Satellite view: Google Maps Navigation uses the same satellite imagery as Google Maps on the desktop to help you get to your destination. Turn on the satellite layer for a high-resolution, 3D view of your upcoming route.
  • No more updates: When using Google Maps Navigation, your phone automatically gets the most up-to-date maps and business listings from Google Maps — you never need to buy map upgrades or update your device.

  • Where are we going? Why type when you can just say it instead? You can speak your destination into Google Maps using Voice Search.
  • Search as you go… For those times when you’re already on the road and need to find a business, Google Maps Navigation searches along your route to give you results that won’t take you far from your path. You can search for a specific business by name or by type, or you can turn on popular layers, such as petrol stations, restaurants or parking.
  • Street View: With Street View, you can see pictures of upcoming turns with your route overlaid. And since locating an address can sometimes be tricky, we’ll show you a picture of your destination as you approach the end of your route, so you’ll know exactly what to look for.

To get Google Maps with Navigation, search for and download the newest release of ‘Google Maps’ in Android Market on your Android 1.6+ phone, or install Google Maps from the Android Market website.

U.S. Products Control More Than 90% Of 3-D Movies Box Office International Revenue

0

In a new report made available to Tekedia, IHS iSuppli discussed how the 3-D market has grown. The global box-office revenue for 3-D movies in 2010 more than doubled to $6.1 billion, up from $2.5 billion generated in 2009.

That’s remarkable growth for a format that launched as recently as 2005, with 2010 now standing as a record year. The international market accounted for $3.9 billion, or 63.9 percent of the market, up from 53.8 percent in 2009. The rest of the 3-D movie market, or 36.1 percent, is represented by North America, including the United States and Canada.

The United States was the world’s single biggest 3-D presence with $2.0 billion in box-office revenue, taking in the largest share at 32.8 percent, down from 42.3 percent in 2009.

The surge in international 3-D box office revenue was almost threefold, up from just $1.4 billion in 2009, driven by a corresponding hike in investment of digital 3-D technology by key international exhibitors, in tandem with the influx in new 3-D movie releases.

This run of exceptional growth in international markets has been instrumental in achieving a current worldwide total in excess of 30,000 3-D screens at June 2011, more than double the number at the same point last year; at least one in four of the world’s screens are now 3-D-capable.

But despite impressive 3-D screen growth internationally, the global market still is dominated by U.S. product, which accounted for more than 90 percent of revenues coming from international 3-D screens.

Top 20 Semiconductor Sales Increase By 8% From 1H2010 To 1H2011

Intel remains the #1 IC supplier, according to a new report from IC Insights. As shown in Figure above, Intel remained firmly in control of the number one spot in the ranking.  In fact, Intel extended its lead over second-ranked Samsung by registering a 43% higher sales level than Samsung in 1H11 as compared to a 24% margin for all of 2010. Although Nvidia’s 1H11/1H10 sales increased by only 1%, it replaced Panasonic in the top 20 ranking.

In total, the top 20 semiconductor suppliers showed an 8% increase in 1H11 sales as compared to 1H10.  This growth rate is four points greater than the worldwide 1H11/1H10 semiconductor market growth rate of 4%.  Also, the to five 1H11/1H10 semiconductor sales growth rate increases were logged by non-memory suppliers.

  1. Infineon; 30% growth from continuing operations (23% using 1H10 exchange rates)
  2. Qualcomm; 29% jump due to surging smartphone IC sales
  3. Intel; 23% increase spurred in part by its acquisition of Infineon’s wireless business
  4. TSMC; 20% growth (10% using 1H10 exchange rates)
  5. Broadcom; 18% increase from strong wireless IC sales

Of the big five memory suppliers in the top 20 ranking (i.e., Samsung, Toshiba, Hynix, Micron, and Elpida), only Samsung and Toshiba registered 1H11/1H10 growth. In total, 10 of the top 20 suppliers outperformed the total worldwide semiconductor industry 1H11/1H10 growth rate of 4%, the report concludes.

Apple iPad Ranks Highest In Customer Satisfaction And Loyalty, Says IHS iSuppli

0

This is expected. Apple products are hot because the people love them. To have some scientific data behind this, IHS iSuppli did  a market study.  They asked tablet owners to indicate how they would recommend the iPad to others based on their use of the device on a scale of 1 to 10  with 10 being they were very likely to recommend it, 5 being neutral and 1 being they would not recommend it.

iPad owners gave an average rating of 8.8 to their Apple iPads, the highest rating of all the 11 top-ranked brands in the survey. More than 80 percent of Apple owners rated their tablet at 8 or higher on the recommendation scale. Fewer than 1 percent gave a rating of less than 5.

The results of the survey highlight the strong brand loyalty amongst the existing iPad owner customer base but also offer some hope for Apple’s main competitors amongst the group planning to purchase a tablet in the next six months. Apple led the pack in this group when purchasers were asked to indicate what brands they will consider for their tablet purchase but Samsung, Dell, Hewlett Packard, Motorola, and RIM all received a substantial number of votes.

Existing owners reported far less price sensitivity than those planning to purchase tablets this year, which provides a definite opening for Apple competitors with a value sensitive price point.

The result is available in full in IHS iSuppli US. Tablet Consumer Preference service  which provides a reliable predictor of current and future demand trends for tablets including screen size, touch interface, features, pricing and retail experience. It also measures the impact of tablets on the purchases and usage of other equipment such as PCs, monitors, handsets and televisions.

Yahoo Mail Shows Signs Of Aging Today – Scheduled Maintenance Is Too Frequent

It is very obvious that Yahoo Mail is aging. The way Yahoo is running it shows that they are making that process faster and quicker. At around 10.45am Boston time, it was unavailable with the information that it was up for maintenance. We hope they fix it.
For most of us that use Yahoo Mail, have you noticed the news feeds you get when you log into your account. Most times, the news is a month ago old. You may be surprised to be reading that Obama has been elected President. The update is too slow and the database does not refresh as required. Hope they will fix that in this maintenance.
