Web4Africa Ltd Acquires Alireta.com Hosting Service [Press Release]

Web4Africa Ltd., the leading web hosting company in West Africa, has acquired the web hosting & domain names services of Alireta Nigeria Limited with effect from 1st May 2011.

 

Founded in March 2003 under the name DomainStandard.net, Alireta broke new grounds by offering domain registration and web hosting services to residents of Nigeria at prices much lower than what was obtainable within Nigeria at that time. The operation has constantly remained among the top ten Nigerian web hosts since inception  and was rebranded to Alireta in May 2008.

 

Web4Africa has acquired 559 active clients who owned 458 domain names, 295 shared hosting accounts and 19 reseller hosting accounts. With few overlaps considered, it is expected that the acquisition would boost Web4Africa’s portfolio to over 13,600 active clients, over 8,100 domain names, over 1,500 shared hosting accounts and 169 reseller hosting accounts.

 

The acquisition would expose Alireta customers to over 70 international domain extensions, at lower prices, more flexible web hosting plan choices like Windows/ASP.NET hosting as well as 7 online payment methods including a method that accepts Nigerian debit cards like Interswitch Verve and GTB Naira Mastercard.

Aviat Networks Advance Synchronization Over Microwave Backhaul

Aviat Networks, Inc., a leader in wireless transmission solutions, has announced it is among the first companies to join the Symmetricom®, Inc, SyncWorld™ Ecosystem Program for delivering tested solutions for mobile backhaul synchronization over packet microwave networks. Collaborating with Symmetricom strengthens Aviat Networks’ solution portfolio for IP network migration by adding IEEE 1588v2 synchronization capability, which enables the smooth introduction of 4G/LTE. This solution capability is in addition to Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE), which was added to Aviat’s Eclipse platform in late 2010.

 

Maintaining accurate timing and synchronization in mobile networks is critical for successful call “hand off” when mobile users are traveling between cell sites and to ensure overall voice quality and performance is maintained. As mobile operators migrate their backhaul networks to Ethernet to efficiently handle the vast amounts of growing data and video traffic, a reliable method of maintaining synchronization over packet network is required. Precision Time Protocol, standardized as IEEE 1588v2, has become the de facto standard for packet timing.

 

Aviat Networks and Symmetricom have also jointly completed extensive performance and interoperability tests to verify the performance of 1588v2 timing over various complex microwave backhaul network configurations under real-world deployment scenarios, including a 10-hop microwave backhaul network supporting Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM).

Android is the greatest thing that has happened in mobility computing.  It has a lot of potentials in Africa. Every school must get their students Android ready. First, what is Android?

Android is an open-source software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. By providing an open platform, it offers developers the ability to build innovative applications. Developers are free to take advantage of the device hardware, access location information, set alarms, run background services, add notification to the status bar, e.t.c.

Justification for proposing this Android training

Applications today are going mobile as convenience is defining tomorrow. The rapid growth rate of the Android market is beyond comprehension. Threats posing from the men of dark world cannot be underestimated as evolution of smart things spur on.  Despite the fact that security in ICT remains a big issue, there is need for considerable measure in curbing the dastard act going on in the cyber world.  We should now be realising how pertinent it is to ensure security of sensitive information or highly classified data either on personal mobile device or on corporate gadget.   Nigeria for instance, the IT Security should also be taken seriously, taking into an account previous activities from the cyber criminals in Nigeria by the so called ‘Yahoo boys’.    Nevertheless, as a precautionary action which I think is very important to the proliferation of Android platform Operating Systems devices – Tablets and Smartphones in our country.

 

Therefore, Android Developers in Nigeria should cultivate habit of caution by integrating Security Applications from the outset into their system builds. I strongly believe to an extent this would improve on the user- ability from the side of M-payment/E-payment via Smartphones as well as tablets because maximum security can boost online transactions which are being looked scary in consumer market in Nigeria especially.   So many forecasts had been predicted towards shipment of more tablets and smartphones in the coming years. So also we shall see more of small and medium businesses (SMB) using more of smartphones and tablet computers.

Google Nigeria Day 2 Report – Could Have Been Better. Is Google Serious to Help Nigeria?

After writing about the presentation by Google Nigerian boss, Juliet, Tuesday, we had high expectations that something will come on Wednesday. Unfortunately, Day 2 was not great. The logistics was not great.

 

Sure, Google is into Nigeria to make money and they will just do that. But helping develop local talents? That is not in their business mission.

 

I agree with TechLoy who tweeted as follows

 

Absolutely, Google is not ready to help Nigeria. It is selling ads that they care. That creative aspect is largely not present. Just read some of the tweets

You noticed right.No nigeria plan.@TechLoy: After attendin #gnigeria 2day, Im convinced Google is not interested n developing the ecosystem.
Google is here to sell. No wonder they are licensing companies as Adwords partners.
Next time. Google should consult external partners. They could be good developers but they are not good organizers. I do not know what I learnt today! People expected to come there and go home with skills. Just noticed that was not the plan.
These are my suggestions:
1. You do not have to do this program yourself. You can outsource.
2. Select 10-20 people and send them for training – all expense paid for Android or Chrome. Again, corporate firms can do that. You make it competitive and this corporate trainer can help you. That will be cost effective than flying people from US and UK and putting them in five star hotel, only not to have time to teach. Training is not a hack job. You guys must use local partners.
3. Fire the event organizers if you did pay for any. They are not good.
4. Learn from this lesson! We will be ready for G Nigeria 2012 but for us to develop local contents, you need to help us. Why not award some funds to corporate trainers to help train some people.
