EU Launches 1.3bn Euro Nigerian Green Energy Project Under Team Europe Initiative (TEI)

0

Nigeria’s pledge to join hands with the rest of the world to combat climate change by shifting to green energy through diversification of its economy to align with the global climate goal of keeping the global temperature increase to well below 20C, has got a major boost.

The European Union (EU) has launched the ‘Team Europe Initiative (TEI) Nigeria Green Economy’ project aimed at stimulating sustainable climate-smart agriculture and renewable energy for economic growth and diversification, NAN reports.

The EU ambassador to Nigeria and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Ms Samuela Isopi, unveiled the project at the 8th EU-Nigeria Business Forum tagged: “Nigeria and the New Economy” on Friday, in Lagos.

Per NAN, Denmark, France, Germany and the Netherlands made up members of the TEI Green Economy Project.

The ambassador said the TEI Green Economy consists of 60 projects of different nature to be executed across the agricultural and energy sectors by 2027 and is valued at 1.3 billion Euros.

Isopi said the project was aimed at improving the competitive advantage of Nigeria’s agriculture and energy sectors, with emphasis on access to clean and renewable energy as well as job creation, skills and capacity development.

She added that the project was a result of collaborative efforts with the EU and member states, private and public sectors and the development financial institutions.

She assured continued support for the Nigerian government in the implementation of its economic diversification policies and new partnerships with the private sector.

“In line with the EU’s Green Deal, the Green Economy Initiative will support the Nigerian government’s efforts to diversify the economy by combining support to enhance access to renewable energy for productive uses and boosting the development of the agricultural sector.

“Collectively, the actions will help Nigeria attain the SDGs and put the country on a sustainable development path.

“The initiative will offer support in areas of expertise and strong European contribution such as climate-smart agriculture, technological and digital solutions, vocational training, employment and entrepreneurship creation as well as access to sustainable energy,” she said.

She said the TEI would forge new partnerships with member states interested in supporting Nigeria’s circular economy efforts.

Markus Wauschkuhn, Germany’s Cluster Coordinator for Sustainable development projects in Nigeria, the project focuses on improving Nigeria’s export potential in the area of ginger, tomatoes, chili, leather and garment and other resources to Europe.

Ms Inga Stefanowicz, EU Team Leader, Green and Digital Economy in Nigeria, said the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Development Financial Institutions would assist various players in the value-chains in the agricultural and energy sectors.

“By combining EIB’s investment facilities with the European Development Finance Institutions and EU member states, the flagship initiative will create space for EU trade and investment while generating job opportunities for Nigeria’s youth.

“In agriculture, support will be provided to promote and increase climate-smart agricultural production and value-added creation in selected value chains to address food insecurity, increase agricultural exports, tackle skills gaps and create jobs.

“The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and state institutions will be supported in the delivery of its mandate, and in particular, development of agricultural education, integrating ICT and technical and vocational education and training,” she said.

Stefanowicz added that field interventions would concentrate on creating positive spillover effects through the value chains including smallholder farmers, aggregators, processors, manufacturers, wholesalers, transporters and retailers.

She said interventions in the energy sector would include capacity building, policy dialogue and advisory services with the ministry of power and its agencies, in developing an enabling policy environment, and adoption and implementation of measures.

“They will concentrate on effective delivery of the Ministry’s mandate including the Paris Agreement Commitment, Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) targets as well as the development of new energy access business models with the private sector.

She added that the team would work with the Federal and State governments to address obstacles to ease of doing business and investment.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Mohammad Abubakar, who was represented by Dr. Emmanuel Olaleye, Director, Agri-Business and Market Development, lauded the initiative. He said that the agricultural sector had the largest potential to diversify the economy and provide the broad-based growth necessary for development as a “new growth engine.”

He said the Federal Government would continue to prioritize activities in the agriculture sector through targeted policies to attract investments, in line with the diversification drive and achieving food security.

The minister said some of the policies include the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation policy, National Agricultural Resilience Framework (NARF, 2014), Agricultural Promotion Policy, (APP, 2016-2020), and National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP, 2019-2025), among others.

The TEI is expected to boost Nigeria’s efforts in implementing its climate agendas. Nigeria developed its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in 2015 towards the ratification of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. It is part of many policies that made up the 2021 – 2030 National Climate Change Policy for Nigeria.

According to the Federal Ministry of Environment Department of Climate Change, Nigeria intends to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity of GDP by 20% by 2030 relative to the emissions intensity of GDP in the base period 2010 to 2014 on an unconditional basis as well as a further 45% on a conditional basis consequent upon receiving climate finance, technology transfer and capacity building from the developed countries.

The greatest liberation in life comes when you believe in yourself

The greatest liberation in life comes when you believe in yourself. Young People, believe in yourself and the energy to unlock the future will come. That #believe will make you aim higher. That #believe will attract the right people around you. That #believe will put you in great companies – associations of doers, makers, and creators.

And remember – if you do not like your teacher, you will likely struggle in his/her subject. And if you do not like your nation, your mind will be blindfolded on the promises it offers. For #Nigeria to work for you, you must find the energy to believe that it can actually “work”. That first step is important for your ascension. I #believe even as I work for a better nation and our world.

Fly like a dragonfly which goes against the water current to reach its destination and  accomplish its mission. Simply No excuses. Discover opportunities from the flanks if the frontal axes are inaccessible, and win new territories. Innovate, Grow  and Execute.

Comment 1: The geographic space called Nigeria offers so much, I struggle to understand why a lot of people from the land cannot see the massive promises the land holds. As long as you are not in a hurry, you will have everything to build your legend here.

The land will shake you, test you, scare you, threaten you, just to validate if you are a true son/daughter of the soil, or just a passing stranger. If you cave in, those who already understand the rigours will feast on your unbelief, because they will collect your portion and expand their own territories. You stay away, wailing and complaining over obstacles created by your fellow compatriots, just to scare you away, and you fell for it.

Nigeria has not scared me and will never scare me, not before, not now, and not in the future; some of us came fully prepared, it’s here or nowhere.

The people you are worried about must be worried about you, except you migrated to Nigeria; but if you are from here, you cannot be threatened by happenings, because you are part of the happenings.

Comment 2: I was in a twitter space discussion yesterday where young people were discussing the issues around the country and what the future holds for them, although this was the subject but from the way the discussion went any one could easily concluded that 90% of the young people had believed that the only way to succeed as a Nigerian is to leave the country (japa) and this is very bad.

Nigeria has suffered a lot of brain drain because of this, we’ve lost our finest talents because they no longer believed in Nigeria but the coming of Peter Obi has brought a sense of hope and many thinking of leaving before are welling to give Nigeria one more chance, we must not get it wrong this time, we all need a country we can love and be proud of.

#believe in myself and I #believe Nigeria would be great again that we would not need to be preached to before we love our country

Your Choice – a broom, an umbrella or humans!

0

You are lost in a forest and you need directions to return home, one zen-master appears, and offers you three choices: a broom, an umbrella and a human. Which one would you choose? Good luck on finding your way back to home of prosperity, abundance, good health, and wisdom!

Comment 1: Trying something different is always difficult for a lot of people, even when they complain to you about their present predicament and misery, rather they keep creating more excuses on why they need to stick with what is not unfavourable to them, for the fear of unknown.

The question remains, what do you really stand to lose for trying something different? At least no one will accuse you of lacking effort and ambition, and you will be at peace with your soul, because it was a choice made with good intentions.

We are already in trouble, and it’s not clear when those who create troubles become solution providers, else their original intent for creating troubles will need to be examined. It’s POssible, never doubt yourself. Humans make things happen, umbrellas and brooms don’t.

Comment #2: 14years ago, I was in a related situation. The bus I was travelling in, broke down in the middle of no where. The driver went for a mechanic and that was when the indefinite wait began.

Firstly, the spot we were, had no phone network, so we couldn’t call. Secondly, the day was maturing unemotionally and we had 6hours or more to our final destination. Thirdly, the clouds gathered and it began to rain.

I reasoned that though the bus provided shelter from the rain(Umbrella), the night was coming when being in that bus without moving will become dangerous and uncertain.

To the surprise of others, I got down in the heavy rain, and started flagging down vehicles indiscriminately with only one goal in mind, “I must leave this place before night fall”.

Drenched, shivering but undeterred and soon a Sienna stopped. I explained my plight to its occupants and they asked me to bring my luggage from the bus, the rest is history.

I don’t know what became of those under the umbrella and even a good broom in that situation was useless.

Dear Nigerians, the promise of following people moving to a Common Destination????? supercedes those who promise Comfort? and cleanliness?, yet remain in stagnation.
Be like me, For No Risk No Results.?

Comment 3: Unless the broom and the umbrella are magical tools of which effectiveness may not be 100% guaranteed as it is currently. So, it is wise to consult with the humans. However, the humans need the fourth force which is God to intervene to assist because the umbrella and the broom are evil spirit in the forest. Good luck everyone.

Comment 4: Sir, still wondering making your platform for one-sided political sojourn; failing to realise that this platform is open to different opinions.

We only know this your platform for knowledge.

But, be ready to get it raw opposing opinion and don’t take offense…

I don’t think this is a familiar path for you, sir!
Your illustration is opeque, don’t you think we need to consider if the “human” has substance, capacity, capability, verifiable evidence of good governance, structure?

My response to comment 4: “Sir, still wondering making your platform for one-sided political sojourn;” – your comment explains how low Nigeria has gone.  People find problems where there are none? If you read this as one-sided, it is your fault, not English language’s fault. Your comment is totally lost because it has no reality to this post. What is one-sided about asking people to choose among 3 parties?

Comment 4 author adds: Ndubuisi Ekekwe, sir, I ve been following your posts on this matter, which I said it is an unknown path: political opinion.

On this path, sir, I think you ve to develop stick skin for opposing views, and give more superior argument,as we know you for. I respect you when it comes to enterpreneurship knowledge.

Sir always Check out those comments in favour of your opinion, which u Amy not find offensive, there u see it review how people view your comments.

Don’t forget pastor Poju just pull down a post, that attracted negative/positive comments, but does the comments drop anybody name? Sir, is this English language fault?

Sir, re-read my posts,u only reply to a part of my comments, leaving the rest observations?

Again, I only know your platform, for knowledge, but I must confess, this path take note of the comments in favour of ur political posts, and be mindful that this is a electioneering period, anybody can read meaning to your posts…nobody is looking for problem where there is none…pastor Poju is a case study.

My follow up Response: This post if it attracts negative comments or makes people feel bad, it is not my fault. We all went to secondary school where we learnt satires, figures of speech, etc. If we live in a society where we cannot use party symbols to open a debate, that is a problem. What is one-sided, you have not explained. Your mindset is that I am favouring humans. But when you do think deeper, you can make a point that favors brooms or umbrellas. Some have argued for a broom, umbrella, excellently here. That is what knowledge is about.

This issue of being offended by anything is our problem in Nigeria.  You write that GDP is down, Nurudeen will say that I am attacking Buhari. I ask people to choose between parties, Ola says I am one-sided. I write that EU is biased on coal policy, and someone tells me that the EU will not give me a visa. What is life if we live that way?

A community member response to Comment 4: Even if it is one sided, what is wrong with that? You enjoy his platform for brilliant takes on business, science, investment, etc but because he seems to have given an opinion on politics, the most critical issue at this time, you think the brilliant Prof is no longer brilliant. Simply because it doesn’t align with your own thinking.

Sorry to say that you don’t belong on Prof’s platform if this is how myopic your thinking is.

You even have the temerity to say: “I don’t think this is a familiar path for you sir!”. It means you have not been reading Prof’s posts with the required level of understanding.

Tesla Hit By New Lawsuit Alleging Racial Abuse Against Workers

0

American multinational automotive and clean energy company, Tesla has been slammed with a lawsuit after fifteen Black former employees of the company filed a lawsuit, alleging that they were subjected to racial abuse and harassment at the factories.

The workers disclosed that they were subjected to derogatory racist slurs, and weird behavior from colleagues, managers, and human resources employees on a regular basis which was disclosed in a lawsuit filed in a California court.

Most of the harassment is said to have occurred at Tesla’s factory in California, which include the use of N-word and terms such as “slavery” or “plantation” or making sexual comments, which the lawsuit claims.

It also alleges that the company’s “standard operating procedures include blatant, open and unmitigated racial discrimination”. Also in the lawsuit, some of the plaintiffs were assigned to the most physically demanding past in Tesla or passed over promotions.

Tesla is currently facing at least 10 lawsuits on the allegations of racial discrimination, and sexual harassment, which includes one by a California civil rights agency. Although the automaker has previously denied all these allegations, stating that it has policies in place to prevent and address workplace misconduct.

Just recently, a federal judge in California issued a fresh trial on the damages Tesla owes to one of its black factory workers who accused the company of racial discrimination after he turned down a $15m award.

Also, a Tesla shareholder has filed a lawsuit accusing Elon Musk and Tesla’s board of directors of neglecting workers’ complaints and fostering a toxic workplace culture. It might interest you to know that this is not the first time Tesla is being accused of racial discrimination against its black workers.

The CEO of the company, Elon Musk who recently took over Twitter met with employees of the platform at a virtual meeting and stated that people should be allowed to say racist things. He also issued a disclaimer that despite the free speech policy, it doesn’t in any way mean Twitter would promote hate speech.

One would be tempted to ask, why would Elon Musk permit people to say racist things on the platform in the first place? Doing such alone, already goes against the free speech policy, all under the guise to promote racial slurs.

After his purchase of the platform, many black users expressed their concerns due to how Elon Musk treated black workers at his company, which they feel he would replicate on the platform. They disclosed that it is probably an end for black Twitter.

They recounted how in the past before his takeover, how Twitter had given them hashtags that turned into movements, like the #BlackLivesMatter and also the #OscarsSoWhite movement that led to pressure for changes at the Academy of motion picture arts and sciences.

With Musk’s takeover, they are skeptical that these movements will either be silenced or not amplified to gain massive recognition, due to his weird perception of blacks. Some have described Musk as a Billionaire BusinessMan with questionable ethics.
