The Greatest Teachers

0

The greatest teachers have liberated the minds of many; find them for your business, education and career.

Education is one of the most important institutions ever created by man. It determines the wealth and prosperity of any society. Even in the medieval time, there was apprenticeship and that was a form of education. But the modern style of education goes beyond followership to helping students become creators of knowledge. In other words, it transforms students from becoming ‘recipients’ of education to ‘users’ of education as they partake in the process.

Nothing changes a society or a nation more than education. I always say that education is simply the liberation of the mind. It opens the mind to new possibilities and frees it from dogmas and destructive norms. It will remain a popular institution because it is the only institution that holds the key to the future.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Plan for a Greater Lagos

1

By Nnamdi Odumody

Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the APC governorship candidate for Lagos gubernatorial election, has a vision for a greater Lagos. With rich experiences spanning the private sector in the banking industry and the public sector of Lagos where he has served in all the administrations since Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as Special Adviser to Deputy Otunba Femi Pedro, Acting Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budgets, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Commissioner for Establishments Training and Pension, Managing Director Lagos State Property Development Corporation and Board Member Lagos State Security Trust Fund. Besides, he was responsible for the preparation of Lagos State Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy. Largely, his preparation for the job as Chief Executive of one of Africa’s largest economies is not in doubt.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s developmental agenda to take Lagos to the next level “Greater Lagos’’ is anchored on five pillars; ’’T.H.E.M.E’’:

  • Traffic Management and Transportation
  • Health and Environment
  • Education and Technology
  • Making Lagos A 21st Century Economy
  • Entertainment and Tourism

Transportation and Traffic Management: Within 9 months of being elected into office, he wants to resolve some key gridlock points which are responsible for the daily traffic problems Lagos has come to be identified with, rehabilitate existing worn-out roads, encourage PPP (public private partnership) investments on roads and highways, connect more communities through link roads and bridges to relieve traffic on existing roads, utilize smart technology to optimize the transport network, and improve traffic safety.

Also, the candidate will leverage the Lagos Volunteer Corps to support traffic management while completing the Blue Rail Line for passenger operations by 2021, and the Red Rail Line in partnership with the Federal Government by 2022. He plans expansion of the water transport routes from 6 to 10 by 2021, scale passenger operations at Ijede, Ibeshe, Falomo, Ijegun Egba, Ipakodo, Osborne, Apapa and Badore jetties by 2020, and invest in water transport infrastructure in partnership with the private sector. He will extend the BRT network to include areas currently not captured in its routes.

In Healthcare, the Lagos Health Insurance Scheme will be expanded  to cover 500,000 households (2.5million) enrolments within the first part of 2019, increase health spending from the current 8.86 percent to 15 percent of  budget, create Healthcare Management System across medical centres, and expand the Lagos State Ambulance and Emergency Service coverage by increasing the number of ambulance points from 15 to 23. He plans to provide 10 new primary healthcare centres for riverine and other underserved areas, and ensure all 37 non-functional primary healthcare centres in the state are refurbished and equipped with modern facilities while leveraging data analytics for health data management including wearable devices for remote health status monitoring and diagnostics.

He has set a target for buying only clean natural gas, electric or hydrogen mass transit buses from 2019, establishing Clean Bus Corridors that will prioritize clean buses and incentivize clean fuel vehicles in specific areas of the state. To tackle the flooding problem, the linked 7 channels drainage system will be expanded and maintained to prevent flooding.

In Education, he plans to increase the Support Our School programme in partnership with the private sector by targeting 100 schools across all the 57 Local Council Development Areas while providing tax incentives for private sector organizations in supporting its technical and tertiary institutions. The candidate also plans to partner with the private sector to establish a special needs school in each senatorial district, leverage technology platforms to teach, access, test and reinforce learning in conjunction with the private sector and development partners, even as it strengthens STEM education in schools, by increasing the number of STEM teachers along with provision of adequate teaching materials for STEM.

To support the Lagos Technology ecosystem, Babajide Sanwo-Olu plans to facilitate the creation of tech hubs by converting unused government buildings across all the LGA’s|LCDA’s within two years of his administration, and collaborate with local, foreign experts, institutions and the Lagos Volunteer Corps  to establish world-class training institutions in the tech areas.

He will create an Independent Power Plants for technology hubs in Lagos, establish an exchange program to match undergraduates in universities within the state with technology startups, to develop skills required by industry before they graduate, and through partnership with the private sector create additional 20 vocational skills training centres and certification programmes for the unemployed and underemployed youths.

To Make Lagos a 21st Century Economy, the following will be done:

  • Local content in state projects will be promoted to grow 100 Innovation Driven Enterprises per annum
  • Creation of at least 3 fully-equipped industrial hubs and makerspaces in all the 3 senatorial districts, leveraging unused government buildings and other infrastructure across the state
  • Increase the capacity utilization to 85 percent of Lagos industrial parks over the next four years
  • Commit 60 billion naira over a period of four years as capital to aid MSME|IDE(Innovation Driven Enterprises) operations and performances through various programmes
  • Increase access to Lagos State Employment Trust Fund by 100 percent to facilitate job and wealth creation.
  • To ensure energy which will fuel the 21st century economy, embedded power generation will be utilized across the state.

Finally as the Entertainment Capital of Nigeria, Babajide Sanwo-Olu will work with stakeholders to create a functional filmcity with an academy for skills training, collaborate with local and foreign experts to establish world-class training institutions for the creative arts industry. He will also support the private sector to locate State of The Art Film and Music Production studios in designated zones. He plans to brand Lagos as the home of entertainment in West Africa.

Update: Babajide has won his election; we hope to experience all these promises within 4 years.

The Victory of Taking Action

0

No greater victory has been achieved than the ability to begin and take action no matter how small.

Ken: I am planning to start a business in Lagos.

Chris: That is great.

Ken: But my friend, I am worried because the socio-economic climate is very bad.

Chris: They have been writing that since 1960 and all the people listening died and nothing changed. But the “deaf men” like Dangote, Elumelu, Ovia, Innoson Founders went ahead.

Ken: Chris, Chris, Chris. How many times did I call you?

Chris: Three times.

Ken: I wanted to be sure my ears were hearing well.

Chris: Nothing is wrong with the big ears. Nations do not kaput. Only faint-hearted men and women fade.

That is right – Chris is right. You can see what you want to see – Nigeria will always be. Live your dream and stop waiting for perfect Nigeria.

Take ACTION – it is a New Year

Nigerian AR/VR Startups Imisi 3D and StanLab Go to Fix The Education Sector

0

By Nnamdi Odumody

Judith Okonkwo through her startup Imisi 3D, an Extended Reality (XR) creation lab, is focused on building the XR ecosystem in Nigeria, and beyond. Imisi 3D is poised to grow a community of African AR|VR (Augmented Reality | Virtual Reality) creators, seed solution builders using AR|VR, and anchor educational and engagement experiences using AR|VR to learners and students.

We are an Extended Reality (AR/VR) creation lab dedicated to growing a community of AR/VR developers in Nigeria, creating solutions using AR/VR, and providing educational and engagement experiences with AR/VR. We see huge potential for AR/VR as a tool for creating everyday solutions and intend to change the technology narrative so that here we become creators and not just consumers of technology. We are future thinking and committed to being responsible ancestors, creating a better world for today and tomorrow.

The technology narrative of Nigeria has been one of consumption, and not creation, and with the advent of XR in the mass consumer space, an opportunity has been provided to change the narrative, and allow ownership of exponential technologies that allow innovators to define our future.

The educational sector in Nigeria is plagued with lack of access to quality education, crowded schools and out-of-school kids which is estimated at 13.2 million. The technologies and methods of yesterday have not solved these problems, and continuing deployment of these methods will lead to the same results of poor education attainment. Also, lack of funding in the sector, poorly trained teachers, and limited schools remain challenges.

Virtual Reality (VR) offers a promise to leapfrog these problems and offers the hope of more affordable, scalable and better quality education. VR delivers immersive experience on anything imaginable. If you can create VR content, you can create any world, or experience, and place your user in it.

Virtual reality (VR) is an interactive computer-generated experience taking place within a simulated environment. It incorporates mainly auditory and visual feedback, but may also allow other types of sensory feedback. This immersive environment can be similar to the real world or it can be fantastical.

Current VR technology most commonly uses virtual reality headsets or multi-projected environments, sometimes in combination with physical environments or props, to generate realistic images, sounds and other sensations that simulate a user’s physical presence in a virtual or imaginary environment. A person using virtual reality equipment is able to “look around” the artificial world, move around in it, and interact with virtual features or items. The effect is commonly created by VR headsets consisting of a head-mounted display with a small screen in front of the eyes, but can also be created through specially designed rooms with multiple large screens. Other forms of VR include augmented reality and mixed reality systems.

Imisi 3D aims to transform education with levrn3, an open source VR platform, for curriculum based learning modules, that supports both immersive classroom experiences for teachers and students. Its solution aims to provide quality education by designing educational modules that will enrich and deepen learning experiences. Levrn3 places a strong emphasis on designing its VR Content for education with users.

It is important to note that that there are other startups in the African continent using Extended Reality to transform education. Sisanda Technologies, a South African Edtech startup has developed SI Realities, a digital science laboratory leveraging Augmented and Virtual Reality for Grade 4 to Grade 12 learners, which will help scale up learning in the sciences – Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Also, Job Oyebisi, a Nigerian who runs StanLab, a Virtual Science Lab, also wants to use VR to train Nigerian high school students on STEM subjects.

The immersive connectivity which is expected to happen around 2022 will ensure that these solutions reach the end users at scale, across Nigeria and the continent. We will continue to document how they impact education, a very critical sector for economic development and human wellbeing.
